Everyone knows the name Cartier is associated with, class, luxury, uniqueness and style. The company was founded in Paris in 1847 by the gentlemen above called Louis-Francois Cartier. His reputation quickly attained worldwide renown for his exquisite designs and styles of beautiful jewelry and opulent fashion accessories. When he recieved a royal commission in 1904 it made Cartier the leading Jeweler to Europe’s monarchies and heads of state. Some time afterwards King Edward VII of England described Cartier’s grandson Louis Cartier as “the watchmaker and jeweler of kings”.
It was only the begining of the 20th century and Cartier had already expanded its collection to include technologically advanced watches. At this time pocket watches were still considered an affluent accessory of upper class gentlemen, Cartier changed all this by popularizing the Wrist Watch and making it an important fashion statement for Men and Women. It was encouraged to own a Cartier Watch as a status symbol among europe’s well-to-do. Officially, Cartier is credited with creating the first ever men’s Wrist Watch, the Santos, produced in 1904. The Watch was commissioned and designed for his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, a well know brazillian aviator who needed to keep an Eye on the time without taking his hands away from the controls of his aircraft. This new Santos Watch was a huge success. Without hesitation, Cartier soon designed his full range of classic watches we are familiar with today. These include Cartier’s signature timepiece “the Tank” which made it’s debut in 1917 at the time of the great war. This Watch was indeed inspired by these awe inducing battlefield war machines the American army had introduced to the fighting in Europe.
In keeping with the royalty theme and after many other requests to perfect the technology, Cartier created the first water-resistant Watch which was named after the “Pasha of Marrakesh”, who had asked Cartier if he could produce a watch for him that he could still wear while swimming in his pool without damaging the Watch, or the Watch losing time. As well as his famous and luxurious watches, Louis Cartier is credited with inventing the highly functional folding clasp in 1910, which is now used by every watchmaker around the globe.
